2nd Gen Tacoma: Rough idle, misfire or lean codes (P0171, P0174, P0300)

Checks, in order

  1. Read the codes and freeze-frame data
Note which cylinder is misfiring or which bank is lean. Freeze-frame shows the conditions when it set.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Intake leaks and hoses
Inspect the intake boot, PCV hoses and vacuum lines for cracks. With the engine idling, spray carb cleaner lightly near joints and listen for a change.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. MAF sensor and throttle body
Clean the MAF with a spray made for it and clean the throttle body per the manual. Dirty parts skew fuel trim and idle.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Spark plugs and coils
Check plug condition and gap, and swap a suspect coil to a different cylinder to see if the misfire follows it.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Fuel pressure and injectors
If basics pass, test fuel pressure and check for clogged injectors. A weak pump causes lean codes under load.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
