2nd Gen Tacoma: Won't crank, clicks, or cranks but won't start

Checks, in order

  1. Battery voltage
Resting voltage should be about 12.4 V or more. Under 12 V, charge and load-test the battery before chasing anything else.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Terminals and grounds
Clean and tighten both battery terminals, the engine ground and the starter cable. Corrosion here causes a click without cranking.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Shift position and clutch switch
On automatics, try Neutral. On manuals, press the clutch fully. A worn switch can block cranking.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Fuel pump prime and fuses
If it cranks but won't start, turn the key to ON and listen for the pump hum near the tank. Check the fuel pump fuse and relay.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Immobilizer and key
A flashing security light means the key isn't being recognized. Try the spare key and check the key battery.
    easy $ · under about $50
  6. Starter
A single loud click with a good battery points to the starter. Test it with a bench or jumper test before replacing.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
