Lexus GX 470: Shudder at 35–45 mph, flare between 2nd and 3rd, or a hard downshift (A750F)

Checks, in order

  1. Check the fluid at temperature
The A750F has no dipstick; the level is set through the overflow plug with the fluid at the specified temperature. Low or burnt fluid explains most shift complaints. Use Toyota WS only.
    medium $ · under about $50
  2. Drain and fill
Two or three drain and fills over a few hundred miles refresh most of the fluid without a flush. Many owners report the shudder softens or disappears with fresh WS.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Codes and relearn
Scan for transmission codes. Disconnecting the battery resets the adaptive shift learning, which can help a hard downshift after a fluid change.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Torque converter
A shudder that survives fresh fluid is a worn converter lockup clutch. That is a transmission-out job; get a quote and weigh it against the truck's value.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: Lexus GX 470, 2003 to 2009, with the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 (timing belt) and the A750F 5-speed automatic. Every US GX 470 has rear air suspension; KDSS was optional from 2004. It shares its chassis with the 4th gen 4Runner and 120 Series Prado, so many 4Runner parts and procedures apply.
