Lexus GX 470: Ticking from the engine on cold start that fades as it warms

Checks, in order

  1. Locate it cold
Run a hose from your ear along each manifold-to-head joint on a cold engine. Soot streaks at the flange or a visible crack near the collector confirm it.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Rule out the engine
A tick that does not change with temperature can be a lifter or a loose plug. Check plug torque on that bank.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Manifold or headers
OEM manifolds run about $225 a side plus gaskets and hardware; owners report about $2,000 installed for both sides at a shop, and header installs quoted at around $1,450 labor. Replace all studs and nuts while it is apart.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: Lexus GX 470, 2003 to 2009, with the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 (timing belt) and the A750F 5-speed automatic. Every US GX 470 has rear air suspension; KDSS was optional from 2004. It shares its chassis with the 4th gen 4Runner and 120 Series Prado, so many 4Runner parts and procedures apply.
