Lexus GX 470: Power steering fluid in the rack boots, whine when turning, fluid dropping

Checks, in order

  1. Pull the boots back
Fluid inside either rack boot is the rack. A damp input shaft under the steering coupler is the same answer. Fluid at the pump or hoses is not.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Check the fluid
Low, dark fluid means it has been running low and hot, which also kills the pump. Top up with the fluid specified for your year and watch the level while you plan the repair.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Replace the rack
Owner-reported costs: a new rack at a dealer around $2,600 installed, a dealer install of an owner-supplied rack about $1,400, a Toyota remanufactured rack at an independent shop about $900, and budget remans under $800 installed. Flush the system and get an alignment after.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: Lexus GX 470, 2003 to 2009, with the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 (timing belt) and the A750F 5-speed automatic. Every US GX 470 has rear air suspension; KDSS was optional from 2004. It shares its chassis with the 4th gen 4Runner and 120 Series Prado, so many 4Runner parts and procedures apply.
