TransmissionCheck engine light with flashing 4LO and TRAC OFF, won't shift past 3rd or 4th when cold (P2714)
P2714 is a line pressure solenoid (SLT) performance code on the A760F 6-speed, and it is the most discussed GX 460 problem on IH8MUD. It usually shows up first on a cold morning as a refusal to shift past 3rd, with the check engine, 4LO and TRAC OFF lights on, and clears up once warm. There is no Lexus service bulletin for it and no single confirmed cause: outcomes range from solenoid swaps that hold to full transmission replacements. Start by reading every code and looking at the fluid before spending money.
- Read all the codes, not just P2714Scan for transmission codes together: P0761 (shift solenoid C), P0766 (D) and P0776 (SL2) often ride along with P2714. In the Aisin 6-speed family those follow-on codes can be caused by low line pressure rather than failed solenoids, so do not buy parts for each code separately. Note whether the code sets cold, hot, or when manually selecting a low gear.easy$
- Fluid condition and levelThe A760F has no dipstick; the level is checked at a 115–133°F fluid temperature through the overflow plug. Pull a sample at the plug: dark or burnt fluid, or glitter, means clutch and bearing material is already circulating. Owners who found black fluid or metal with this code mostly ended up replacing the transmission. On a high-mileage unit that has never been serviced, several owners report that repeated flushes made the failure arrive faster.medium$
- Drop the pan and look at the filter and magnetsClean fluid with a light grey paste on the magnets and clean filter is normal wear. Metal flakes in the filter or chunks on the magnets point to the torque converter or clutches, not the solenoid. While the pan is off, measure the solenoids: owners report 11–15 ohms on healthy units. Pan gasket and filter are under $200 in parts.medium$$
- The valve body and the SLT solenoidThe SLT (3-way linear) solenoid lives in the valve body, reachable from the pan without pulling the transmission. A solenoid alone is about $300–450 in Toyota parts; one IH8MUD moderator puts the odds of a solenoid-only fix around even, and a replacement valve body costs well under a transmission. Verify the solenoid part number by VIN before ordering. In the same Aisin 6-speed family, a leaking valve body end plug can dump line pressure and set the S1–S4 performance codes; Sonnax and TransGo sell threaded O-ring plug kits for it. One GX 460 owner tried the plug kit and still needed a transmission, so treat it as a maybe.hard$$
- Torque converter and transmission replacementMetal in the pan, shudder in 1st–2nd or slipping in 3rd–4th after the code means the damage is past the valve body. Lexus sells a remanufactured transmission with converter (part 35010-35B70-84) for roughly $3,100–3,400 plus a core charge; dealer installs have been quoted at $7,300–8,400 and independent installs around $4,000 on top of the unit. Factory R&R time is about 12 hours plus reprogramming. The 5th gen 4Runner's A750F is a different unit, so 4Runner parts and prices do not carry over.hard$$$
- Living with it, and preventionSome owners drive it manually (upshifting around 2,200–2,500 rpm) for the first 15 minutes on cold mornings and report no codes. For trucks that have not thrown the code: drain and fill WS fluid every 20,000–30,000 miles and drop the pan and filter every 30,000–60,000. The GX 460 has no external transmission cooler, and owners blame heat plus the 'lifetime fluid' label for early wear. Lexus only schedules ATF service at 60,000 miles under towing use.easy$
EmissionsCheck engine light with 4LO and TRAC OFF flashing, codes P0418, P2440, P2442, P2445 (2010–2013)
2010–2013 GX 460s use a secondary air injection pump whose foam intake filter breaks down with moisture; the pump chews the foam and the debris jams the air switching valves on both banks. Lexus addressed it in bulletin L-SB-0028-14 and a 2019 special service campaign (JLG), so check for coverage before paying for the repair. 2014 and later trucks got redesigned parts.
- Confirm the codes and the model yearP0418 is the pump circuit; P2440–P2447 are the switching valves stuck open or closed on bank 1 or bank 2. On a 2014 or newer truck, these codes point elsewhere (wiring, a failed valve) rather than the filter debris problem.easy$
- Check for campaign coverageCall a Lexus dealer with your VIN and ask whether Special Service Campaign JLG (2019) or any warranty enhancement is open. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0028-14 Rev1 covers 2010–2013 GX 460 and calls for the pump (17610-0C040) and/or switching valves (25701-38100 bank 1, 25702-38050 bank 2) with about 2.3 hours of labor. The emissions warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles federally and 7/70 in CARB states.easy$
- Inspect the pump filter and valvesPull the pump intake and look at the foam filter; crumbling foam confirms the cause. Debris in the switching valves jams them open, which is what sets the P244x codes. Out of warranty, owners report dealer repairs in the $2,000–2,500 range for pump and both valves.medium$$$
- Bypass kitsAftermarket bypass modules that fool the ECU are a common owner workaround on Toyota V8s. They remove an emissions device, which is illegal for a road vehicle under federal law and will fail a visual or OBD inspection where those are done. If you go that way, understand what you are giving up before you unplug anything.medium$$
Steering & SuspensionTruck sits lower on one side, leans right, or KDSS feels stiff after a lift
A GX 460 that leans to one side (usually the right, viewed from behind) is common enough that Lexus wrote a bulletin for it: L-SB-0015-21 replaces the front left coil spring when the side-to-side difference is more than 20 mm. Stiff or 'sticky' KDSS after a lift is a different problem and is almost always an install issue.
- Measure the leanOn level ground, measure from the ground to the fender lip at all four corners. Lexus's threshold is more than 20 mm (about 3/4 inch) difference left to right at the front. Write the numbers down before going to the dealer.easy$
- The spring bulletinL-SB-0015-21 Rev1 (2021–2022, superseding L-SB-0041-14) covers 2010–2023 GX 460: the fix is a new front left coil spring and an alignment, about 2.2 hours, under the 4 year/50,000 mile basic warranty. Out of warranty it is still a cheap fix relative to chasing KDSS. The bulletin's two revisions list the spring part number supersession in opposite directions, so let the dealer pull the current number.medium$$
- KDSS after a liftThe KDSS hydraulic system needs its two valve screws opened during a lift install so the system can re-center, then closed. A lift done without that step leaves the truck leaning or the sway bars loaded. Owners fix it by jacking the truck, opening the screws two to three turns, settling the suspension, and closing them. This is community practice, not a factory procedure.medium$
- Rule out the rear air suspensionOn Premium and Luxury trims with rear air springs, a rear corner that sags overnight is the air system, not KDSS. See the air suspension symptom.easy$

Steering & SuspensionRear end sags, rides soft or bottoms out, compressor runs a lot, or a Check Air Suspension message
Premium (2010–2013) and Luxury (2014+) GX 460s have rear air springs with automatic leveling. As they age, the springs leak, the compressor works harder, and the height sensors drift. A truck that is soft and bottoming out with a compressor that still runs usually has a height or sensor problem; one that sags overnight has a leak.
- Overnight sag testPark on level ground and measure rear ride height (owners use about 36 inches from the ground to the fender lip as the target) at night and again in the morning. A corner that drops overnight is leaking: air spring, line or fitting. Soapy water on the spring and fittings finds it.easy$
- Compressor and relayListen for the compressor after starting the truck with a load in the back. One that runs constantly is feeding a leak; one that never runs with a low rear end is a compressor, relay or fuse problem. Compressors that pump leaking springs for months overheat and die, so fix the leak first.medium$$
- Height sensors and linkageEach rear height sensor has a linkage that corrodes or bends. A soft, bouncy ride with a working compressor points to the sensors reading wrong rather than a leak. Check the linkage for play and the connector for corrosion before replacing anything.medium$$
- Repair or convertOEM rear air struts run several hundred dollars each before labor. Conversion kits to steel coils (Strutmasters, around $370 for springs, shocks and hardware; Ironman 4x4 sells an adjustable airbag-delete kit) are the common fix on trucks used off road, and they remove the leveling function. Kits may not switch off the dash warning, so ask before buying.medium$$
CoolingPink crust around the front of the engine, coolant smell, or slow coolant loss with no puddle
The 1UR-FE has two well known coolant leaks. The water pump weeps from its drain hole and leaves a pink or white crust on the pulleys and skid plate, sometimes as early as 30,000 miles. The valley plate between the cylinder banks, sealed with silicone under the intake manifold, seeps toward the back of the engine and shows up as a smell and slow loss with no puddle. Both are covered by the 6 year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty if caught in time.
- Look at the water pump weep holeWith a light, look below the pump pulley at the front of the engine and at the top of the skid plate for dried pink or white residue. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0039-20 distinguishes a seep (dried residue, no drip) from a leak; dealers may not replace a pump that only seeps. Owner-reported dealer parts: pump 16100-09525 about $125, belt about $55, plus roughly $700 labor.easy$
- Pressure test the systemA cooling system pressure tester held at cap pressure for 20 minutes will show a leak you cannot see running. Check the heater hose plastic T-fittings at the firewall while you are there; owners report them crumbling and replace them with Lexus hose assemblies or brass tees.easy$
- Valley plateCoolant at the back of the engine or on the bell housing, with no pump residue, is the valley plate. The intake manifold comes off and the plate is resealed with FIPG. Dealer quotes run around $2,000; owners have had it done under goodwill for less, and it is cheaper combined with other top-end work. Reported between about 70,000 and 120,000 miles.hard$$$
- Refill correctlyUse Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink premix). Capacity is roughly 14.5 quarts, more with the rear heater. Refill under vacuum or bleed carefully; an air pocket in a V8 shows up as a heater that blows cold and a temperature gauge that swings.medium$
EngineOil on the front of the engine, oil in the spark plug wells, or burning oil smell after a drive
GX 460 oil leaks come in three sizes. Valve (cam) cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals are cheap and show up as oil in the plug wells. The timing cover seep, reported around 60,000–75,000 miles, is a bigger job and is covered under the 6/70 powertrain warranty if you catch it. A cam tower leak is the most involved. Find the highest point of the leak before paying for anything.
- Clean and find the highest wet pointDegrease the front and sides of the engine, drive it, and look again. Oil runs down, so the source is the highest wet spot. Oil at the front cover seam near the water pump is the timing cover; oil along the top edge of a bank is a cam cover gasket.easy$
- Pull a coil and look in the plug wellsOil pooled around a spark plug is a plug tube seal, replaced with the valve cover gasket. Dealer quotes for this run around $700 per side; it is a reasonable driveway job on the 1UR with patience.medium$$
- Timing cover seepReported mostly on 2011–2013 trucks at 60,000–75,000 miles. Dealer quotes are about $2,000–2,200 because the front of the engine comes apart; under 6 years/70,000 miles Lexus covers it. One owner resealed it with FIPG while doing the water pump, which is the efficient way to do it out of warranty.hard$$$
- Not the engine?Oil at the back of the transmission or on the transfer case is the transfer case input shaft seal, the subject of Lexus tech tips L-TT-0176-15 and L-TT-0198-16. Check the transfer case fluid level if you find it.medium$$
Steering & SuspensionSteering wheel flutter or vibration at 55–70 mph that balancing did not fix
A fast flutter in the wheel at highway speed on 2010–2012 GX 460s was common enough for Lexus bulletin L-SB-0020-12: check wheel balance and road force first, then install a preload spring in the steering control valve. Tires cause most of the rest.
- Road force balanceHave the tires road-force balanced and the radial force variation measured. Lexus's bulletin requires this before the steering fix, and it solves most highway vibrations on its own.easy$
- The steering bulletinL-SB-0020-12 (March 2012) covers steering flutter at about 55–70 mph on early GX 460s with a preload spring installed in the steering control valve. A Lexus dealer can confirm whether it applies to your VIN; owners discuss it in the long ClubLexus vibration thread.medium$$
- Front shocks and tie rodsLeaking front shocks (Lexus bulletin L-SB-0045-19 for 2014–2020) and worn tie rod ends let a balanced tire shake the wheel. Check for shock oil and for play with the wheel off the ground.medium$$
- BrakesIf it only shakes when braking, it is rotor runout. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0015-13 addressed front brake squeak with a new rotor design; warped rotors are an owner complaint on heavier trims.medium$$
Fuel & IgnitionEngine stalls, cranks but won't start, or runs rough under load (2018–2019 fuel pump recall)
2018–2019 GX 460s are in Toyota's low-pressure fuel pump recall (NHTSA 20V682, Lexus 20LA01): the pump impeller can swell and the engine can stall or refuse to start. Older trucks that stall or won't start need the usual fuel, spark and battery checks.
- Run the VINCheck nhtsa.gov/recalls or a Lexus dealer for 20V682. The fix is a new pump assembly at no cost. A separate class action settlement (23LE01) covers some related fuel pump complaints.easy$
- Battery and connections firstA GX that cranks slowly or clicks has a battery problem, not a fuel problem. Resting voltage should be 12.4 V or more, and the terminals clean and tight.easy$
- Fuel pressure and codesRead the codes with a scanner and check for fuel pressure at the rail. A weak pump sets lean or misfire codes under load before it fails outright.medium$$
- Spark and ignitionA misfire on one cylinder is a coil or plug; swap the coil to a neighbor and see if the code follows. Oil in the plug wells (see the oil leak symptom) shorts coils.medium$
