Lexus GX 460: Engine stalls, cranks but won't start, or runs rough under load (2018–2019 fuel pump recall)

Safety: A stall at speed takes power steering and brake assist with it. If the truck stalls while moving, shift to neutral, restart if you can, and get off the road.

Checks, in order

  1. Run the VIN
Check nhtsa.gov/recalls or a Lexus dealer for 20V682. The fix is a new pump assembly at no cost. A separate class action settlement (23LE01) covers some related fuel pump complaints.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Battery and connections first
A GX that cranks slowly or clicks has a battery problem, not a fuel problem. Resting voltage should be 12.4 V or more, and the terminals clean and tight.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Fuel pressure and codes
Read the codes with a scanner and check for fuel pressure at the rail. A weak pump sets lean or misfire codes under load before it fails outright.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Spark and ignition
A misfire on one cylinder is a coil or plug; swap the coil to a neighbor and see if the code follows. Oil in the plug wells (see the oil leak symptom) shorts coils.
    medium $ · under about $50
