5th Gen 4Runner: Harsh shifts, shudder at steady speed, or hunting between gears

Checks, in order

  1. Fluid level and condition
Check the level with the engine warm, following the procedure in the manual. Fluid should be red and clean; dark or burnt-smelling fluid means service is overdue.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Drain and fill
A drain and fill with the correct Toyota fluid is cheap insurance. Do not use a high-pressure flush machine on a high-mileage unit.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  3. Check for stored codes
Read for converter clutch or solenoid codes, such as P0741, which show lockup trouble. Note when the shudder happens, usually light throttle at 35 to 50 mph.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Ask a dealer about software updates
Ask a Toyota dealer whether any transmission software updates or bulletins apply to your VIN before paying for parts.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Converter or internal repair
If service and software do not help, the torque converter is the next suspect. This is a shop job requiring transmission removal.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
