5th Gen 4Runner: Clunk or knock in the steering, loose feel, or shimmy at speed

Safety: Loose steering parts can fail without warning. If you can move a wheel by hand with the truck jacked up, do not drive it until it is repaired.

Checks, in order

  1. Tire balance and condition
Look for cupping, flat spots or bulges and get a road force balance if the shake is speed-specific. This resolves most steering wheel shake.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Lug nuts and wheel bearings
Check lug nut torque, then jack up the front and rock the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then 3 and 9. Play in one direction suggests a bearing or ball joint.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Ball joints and tie rods
With the front wheel off the ground, have a helper work the wheel while you watch the joints for movement. Torn boots and play mean replacement.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Steering intermediate shaft
A knock felt through the wheel when turning at parking speeds, with no play in the tie rods, points to the shaft near the firewall. Check for slop in the splined joint.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Alignment and aftermarket changes
A lift, larger tires or worn bushings can cause shimmy. Get an alignment and review the parts you changed.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  6. Driveshaft and U-joints
If the shake is felt in the seat or floor instead of the wheel, check the rear driveshaft U-joints for play and rust, and for a lost balance weight.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
