3rd Gen Tundra: "Reduced engine power" warning with P0243 or P0247, or a rattle from the turbos at idle

Checks, in order

  1. Codes first
P0243 and P0247 are the wastegate actuator circuits for each turbo; P0299 is underboost. With the reduced power message these are warranty claims, and the tech tip tells technicians to consult Toyota before replacing a turbo, so expect a diagnostic visit rather than parts off the shelf.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Locate a rattle
At idle, have a helper blip the throttle while you listen at each turbo. A rattle that changes when you press on the actuator rod is the flapper or linkage. A rattle that moves with the exhaust is a heat shield; see the exhaust rattle symptom.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Check for leaks around the turbos
Coolant or oil residue on the turbo housings or the smell of coolant after a drive means a line or seal, which is also warranty work. Owners have chased slow coolant loss to the turbo and valley area.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Warranty position
Turbos are powertrain parts under the 5 year/60,000 mile warranty. Out-of-warranty prices for the V35A turbo assemblies were not something owners had reported as of this writing.
    easy $ · under about $50

Applies to: 3rd generation Tundra, 2022 on, with the 3.4L twin-turbo V35A-FTS V6 and the 10-speed automatic, including the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Most items are covered by Toyota's 3 year/36,000 mile basic and 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranties or by an open recall, so the first check on this truck is usually a VIN lookup.
