3rd Gen Tundra: Rear camera image missing or wrong, blank instrument cluster, or the multimedia screen reboots

Safety: A rear camera that fails to show is a federal safety requirement issue, which is why it is a recall and not a bulletin; get it done.

Checks, in order

  1. VIN check
Run the VIN for 25V657, 26V038, 22V285, 22V501 and 23V111. All are software updates done free at a dealer, some over the air.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Soft reset the head unit
Hold the volume knob about 10 seconds to restart the multimedia unit. For a reboot loop, owners report deleting the driver profile in the Toyota app and then doing a factory reset from the settings menu.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Software version
Ask the dealer to confirm the multimedia software is current; T-SB-0012-24 (2024) applied versions 2050 and 2170 to 2022 trucks for reboots, blank screens, flicker after a text and CarPlay and Bluetooth problems. 2023 trucks had their own bulletin.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Hardware
A head unit that still fails after updates is replaced under the basic warranty. Out of warranty, used units must be programmed to the VIN and new ones are very expensive, so exhaust the software route first.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 3rd generation Tundra, 2022 on, with the 3.4L twin-turbo V35A-FTS V6 and the 10-speed automatic, including the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Most items are covered by Toyota's 3 year/36,000 mile basic and 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranties or by an open recall, so the first check on this truck is usually a VIN lookup.
