2nd Gen Tundra: Power steering fluid leak, groan when turning, or sudden heavy steering

Safety: A sudden loss of power assist at speed is manageable but startling; at parking speeds the wheel gets very heavy. Do not ignore a fast leak.

Checks, in order

  1. Run the VIN
nhtsa.gov/recalls or a Toyota dealer will show whether 21V920 (Toyota 21TB10) is open or completed on your truck.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Find the leak
Pull back the rack boots: fluid inside means the rack seals. Fluid at the pump or reservoir hoses is a hose or the pump. Check the reservoir level and condition; dark fluid means it has been low and hot.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Outside the recall
New OEM racks installed at a dealer are reported around $2,600; Toyota remanufactured units installed independently closer to $900–1,400. Flush the system when the rack is replaced or the new one dies early.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
