2nd Gen Tundra: Rust on the frame rails or rear crossmember, flaking or soft spots

Safety: Perforation near spring hangers, the rear crossmember or body mounts can fail under load. Have a frame shop assess it before towing.

Checks, in order

  1. Hammer test
Tap the rails, the rear crossmember, the leaf spring hangers and inside the C-channel sections with a small hammer. Solid steel rings; a thud or flakes means thin metal. Check where mud packs: above the rear axle and behind the front wheels.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Check the service history
Ask a Toyota dealer to run the VIN for completed ZH7 work on a 2007–2008; a replaced frame is a selling point. Expired coverage is not reopened.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Treat and protect
Wire brush loose scale, convert surface rust, and coat with a lanolin or wax underbody product yearly if you drive on salted roads. Clear the frame drain holes.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Repair or walk away
Sectional repair of a perforated rail is a fabrication job. On a purchase, a soft frame is a reason to keep shopping; prices for clean southern trucks reflect it.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
