1st Gen Tacoma: Oil leak or oil smell, drips under the engine

Checks, in order

  1. Clean and find the source
Degrease the engine, drive a short distance and look for the first fresh oil. Oil runs down, so the source is above the lowest wet spot.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals
Look for oil around the cover edges and inside the plug wells. Replacing the gaskets and tube seals is a cheap fix on all three engines.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Distributor O-ring
Check the base of the distributor for oil. A leaking O-ring is cheap to replace.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Oil pan, drain plug and filter
Check the pan gasket, drain plug washer and the filter seal. Don't overlook an overtightened or loose filter.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Front and rear crank seals
A leak at the bell housing points to the rear main seal, which means pulling the transmission. A leak behind the crank pulley points to the front seal.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 1995.5 to 2004 Tacoma with the 2RZ-FE 2.4L, 3RZ-FE 2.7L and 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Code-based checks assume OBD-II (1996 and newer); earlier trucks may use a different diagnostic setup.
