1st Gen Tacoma: Brake problems: soft pedal, pulling, grinding or ABS light

Safety: Brakes are a safety system. If the pedal sinks, you lose fluid, or the truck pulls hard, do not keep driving it.

Checks, in order

  1. Fluid level and condition
Check the reservoir. A low level means a leak or worn pads. Dark or old fluid should be flushed.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Pads, rotors and drums
Pull the wheels and measure pad thickness. Check the rotors for deep grooves or lips and the rear drums for wear and wet shoes.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Brake lines and hoses
Inspect the steel lines along the frame and the rubber hoses at each wheel for rust, bulges or seepage. Rusted lines can burst suddenly.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Sticking calipers and wheel cylinders
A truck that pulls or smells hot after driving usually has a seized caliper or slide pin. Look for wet wheel cylinders on the rear drums.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Master cylinder and proportioning valve
If the pedal sinks slowly with no external leak, the master cylinder may be bypassing. Have it tested by a shop.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 1995.5 to 2004 Tacoma with the 2RZ-FE 2.4L, 3RZ-FE 2.7L and 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Code-based checks assume OBD-II (1996 and newer); earlier trucks may use a different diagnostic setup.
