4th Gen 4Runner: Clicking behind the dash, A/C or heater not changing temperature

Checks, in order

  1. Listen for clicking
With the key on, change the temperature and mode settings and listen behind the dash. Repeated clicking points to a stripped actuator gear.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Cabin air filter and blower
Replace a clogged filter and check blower speeds. Weak airflow is often just the filter.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Compressor clutch
With the A/C on, check that the compressor clutch engages. If it doesn't, check the fuse, relay and refrigerant pressure.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Refrigerant level
Low refrigerant means there is a leak. Have it leak tested and not just topped off.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Replace the actuator
Actuators are replaceable but access can be tight. Replace the one that is clicking.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500
