# FJ Cruiser Maintenance Schedule: 5k to 120k Mile Checklist (2007–2014)

> **Quick answer:** The FJ has two different schedules. 2010–2014 (dual VVT-i, 0W-20): oil every 10,000 miles on 0W-20, engine and cabin air filters every 30,000, coolant at 100,000 then every 50,000, spark plugs at 120,000. 2007–2009 (5W-30): oil every 5,000 miles, cabin filter cleaned every 5,000 and replaced every 15,000, engine air filter every 30,000, spark plugs every 30,000, valve clearance check at 60,000 and 120,000, coolant at 100,000. Both years: rotate tires every 5,000 and grease the propeller shaft every 15,000. Compiled from Toyota's 2009 and 2011 FJ Cruiser maintenance guides.

> **The FJ has two different schedules.** **2010–2014 (dual VVT-i, 0W-20):** oil every **10,000 miles** on 0W-20, engine and cabin air filters every **30,000**, coolant at **100,000** then every 50,000, spark plugs at **120,000**. **2007–2009 (5W-30):** oil every **5,000 miles**, cabin filter cleaned every 5,000 and replaced every 15,000, engine air filter every 30,000, **spark plugs every 30,000**, valve clearance check at 60,000 and 120,000, coolant at 100,000. Both years: rotate tires every 5,000 and grease the propeller shaft every 15,000. Compiled from Toyota's 2009 and 2011 FJ Cruiser maintenance guides.

The FJ Cruiser changed engines in the middle of its run. The 2010 model year got the dual VVT-i version of the 1GR-FE, which switched to 0W-20 oil and long-life iridium spark plugs, and Toyota's maintenance schedule changed with it. If you go by a generic "FJ maintenance" list, you will either change plugs 90,000 miles early on a 2012, or leave 2008 plugs in four times too long. This checklist gives both schedules, straight from Toyota's own guides, plus the dirt-road and towing items that matter on a truck most owners actually take off-road.

**Where this comes from.** The 2007–2009 schedule is from Toyota's *2009 FJ Cruiser Scheduled Maintenance Guide*. The 2010–2014 schedule is from the *2011 FJ Cruiser Warranty and Maintenance Guide*. Toyota prints one per model year; if you want the official log for your exact year, it is on Toyota's owners site. Oil specs and capacities for both engines are in our [FJ Cruiser fluids guide](https://toyotadata.com/guides/fj-cruiser-fluid-capacities-and-types-2007-2014/).

## 2010–2014 FJ Cruiser Schedule

Every visit (every 5,000 miles or 6 months) includes a tire rotation, a fluid level check, a floor mat check and a visual brake check.

| MILES / MONTHS | REPLACE OR SERVICE | MAJOR INSPECTIONS |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 5k / 6 mo | Rotate tires | Fluids, brakes (visual) |
| 10k / 12 mo | Oil and filter | |
| 15k / 18 mo | Grease and re-torque propeller shaft | Full under-truck list |
| 20k / 24 mo | Oil and filter | |
| 30k / 36 mo | Oil and filter, **engine and cabin air filters**, propeller shaft service | Full list plus brake thickness and runout, fuel system, transfer case oil, transmission fluid |
| 45k / 54 mo | Propeller shaft service | Full under-truck list |
| 60k / 72 mo | Oil and filter, engine and cabin air filters, propeller shaft service | Full list plus drive belts (first check) |
| 75k / 90 mo | Propeller shaft service | Full list plus drive belts |
| 90k / 108 mo | Oil and filter, engine and cabin air filters, propeller shaft service | Full list plus drive belts |
| 100k / 120 mo | Oil and filter, **engine coolant (first change)** | |
| 105k / 126 mo | Propeller shaft service | Full list plus drive belts |
| 120k / 144 mo | Oil and filter, engine and cabin air filters, propeller shaft service, **spark plugs** | Full list plus drive belts |

Oil and filter continue every 10,000 (30k, 40k, 50k and so on). **Oil interval:** the guide says the FJ is certified for 0W-20 and the interval is 10,000 miles or 12 months **if 0W-20 is used**. With 5W-20, change at 5,000 miles. If most of your driving is under a special operating condition, change it every 5,000 regardless of oil.

**Clutch fluid.** The 2011 guide lists "replace clutch fluid" at 30k, 60k, 90k and 120k, with a footnote limiting it to trucks used daily for 30 minutes or more off-road at high engine speed and low road speed, such as heavy cargo or off-road trailer towing. It applies to manual-transmission trucks only. Clutch fluid is the same DOT 3 as the brakes, and many owners change both every few years anyway.

## 2007–2009 FJ Cruiser Schedule

The early trucks run 5W-30 and a 5,000-mile oil change at every visit.

| MILES / MONTHS | REPLACE OR SERVICE | MAJOR INSPECTIONS |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 5k / 6 mo (every visit) | Oil and filter, rotate tires, **clean** cabin air filter | Brakes (visual) |
| 15k / 18 mo | Oil and filter, **replace** cabin air filter, grease and re-torque propeller shaft (4WD) | Full under-truck list |
| 30k / 36 mo | Oil and filter, cabin and engine air filters, propeller shaft service, **spark plugs** | Full list plus brake thickness and runout, fuel system, transfer case oil, transmission fluid |
| 45k / 54 mo | Oil and filter, cabin air filter, propeller shaft service | Full under-truck list |
| 60k / 72 mo | Same as 30k | Full list plus drive belts (first check) and **engine valve clearance** |
| 75k / 90 mo | Oil and filter, cabin air filter, propeller shaft service | Full list plus drive belts |
| 90k / 108 mo | Same as 30k | Full list plus drive belts |
| 100k / 120 mo | Oil and filter, **engine coolant (first change)**, clean cabin filter | |
| 105k / 126 mo | Oil and filter, cabin air filter, propeller shaft service | Full list plus drive belts |
| 120k / 144 mo | Same as 30k | Full list plus drive belts and engine valve clearance |

**Yes, spark plugs every 30,000.** Toyota's 2009 guide prints "replace spark plugs" at 30k, 60k, 90k and 120k for this engine, with the note that plug service is required under the emissions warranty. The valve clearance check at 60k and 120k is for tappet noise and engine vibration, adjusted only if needed.

## The "Full Under-Truck List"

On both schedules, the 15k-type visits inspect ball joints and dust covers, brake lines and hoses, CV boots (4WD), engine coolant, exhaust pipes and mountings, both differentials' oil, the radiator and condenser, the steering gear box, and the steering linkage and boots.

The 30k-type visits add brake pad and rotor thickness and runout, the fuel lines, fuel tank band and vapor hoses, the fuel cap gasket, transfer case oil, and the transmission fluid or oil. Drive belts are added from 60k, then checked every 15,000.

## Special Operating Conditions

Do these **only if most of your driving** is under the condition. The 2010–2014 guide lists four conditions; the 2009 guide lists only dirt roads and towing.

| CONDITION | 5k / 10k-TYPE VISITS | 15k, 45k, 75k, 105k | 30k AND 90k | 60k AND 120k |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Dirt or dusty roads** | Inspect ball joints, CV boots, engine air filter, steering linkage; grease and re-torque propeller shaft; tighten chassis and body nuts and bolts; 2010+: oil every 5k | Inspect engine air filter; tighten nuts and bolts; 2010+: oil | Replace transfer case oil (4WD) on 2010+; tighten nuts and bolts | Replace transfer case oil (4WD) on 2010+; tighten nuts and bolts |
| **Towing, roof carrier or heavy loads** | Grease and re-torque propeller shaft; tighten nuts and bolts; 2010+: oil every 5k | Replace front (4WD) and rear diff oil; tighten nuts and bolts | Replace front and rear diff oil, manual transmission oil, transfer case oil | Replace front and rear diff oil, transfer case oil, **transmission fluid or oil** |
| **Trips under 5 miles below 32°F** (2010+) | Oil and filter every 5k | Oil and filter | | |
| **Long idling or low-speed driving** (2010+) | Oil and filter every 5k | Oil and filter | | |

On the 2009 schedule, the 30k-type dirt-road box only adds tightening chassis nuts and bolts; the transfer case oil change for dusty driving appears on the 2010+ schedule. The propeller shaft items include driving on **salted roads**, so salt-belt FJs should be greased every 5,000.

**For a typical trail-driven FJ on the 2010+ schedule:** oil every 5,000; diff oil every 15,000 if you tow; transfer case oil every 30,000; transmission fluid at 60,000 and 120,000 if you tow.

## Doing It Yourself: Oil Change on a 2010–2014 FJ

1. **Warm the engine briefly** and park level.
2. **Remove the skid plate access** for the drain plug and filter housing.
3. **Drain the oil** into a pan that holds 7 quarts. Use a new drain plug gasket.
4. **Drain the filter housing through its drain,** then remove the cap with a 64 mm 14-flute cap wrench.
5. **Fit the new element and O-ring,** oil the O-ring, and tighten the cap to the torque in your owner's manual.
6. **Fill with 0W-20** (6.4 qt with the filter), run the engine, check for leaks, then top up to the dipstick's full mark.
7. **Reset the maintenance light** and log the date and mileage.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How often should I change the oil in an FJ Cruiser?

2010–2014: every 10,000 miles or 12 months with 0W-20, or every 5,000 if you use other oil or drive mostly on dirt, tow, make short trips in freezing weather or idle a lot. 2007–2009: every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

### When do FJ Cruiser spark plugs need to be changed?

2010–2014 FJs change them at 120,000 miles. Toyota's 2009 guide lists spark plug replacement every 30,000 miles for the 2007–2009 engine.

### What is done at the FJ Cruiser 30,000 mile service?

Oil and filter, engine and cabin air filters, tire rotation, greasing and re-torquing the propeller shaft, and a full inspection including brakes, fuel lines, the fuel cap gasket, transfer case oil and transmission fluid. 2007–2009 trucks also get new spark plugs. Towing trucks get both diffs, the transfer case and (manuals) the transmission oil changed.

### When should the coolant be changed in an FJ Cruiser?

At 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months, on both schedules.

### Does the FJ Cruiser need a valve adjustment?

Toyota's 2009 guide has the valve clearance inspected at 60,000 and 120,000 miles, checking for tappet noise and vibration and adjusting only if needed. The 2011 guide does not list it.

### Does the FJ Cruiser transmission fluid need changing?

Not on the normal schedule, which inspects it at the 30k-type visits. On the towing schedule, Toyota changes the transmission fluid or oil at 60,000 and 120,000 miles.
