"content_markdown": "> QUICK ANSWER\n>\n> **The RAV4 Prime uses 36.0 kWh per 100 miles on electric and gets 38 mpg on gas (EPA).** That makes electric driving cheaper whenever your electricity price per kWh is below your gas price divided by **13.7**. At $3.50 gas that break-even is about **$0.256 per kWh**; at $4.00 gas it is about **$0.292**. Most home electricity rates fall under that, but high-rate regions and public fast charging can fall above it. Use the calculator below with your own prices.\n\nOwners in high-electricity-rate states argue that the Prime's electric mode can cost more per mile than its gas engine. Whether that is true for you is arithmetic, and it takes two numbers: what you pay per kWh and what you pay per gallon. The calculator below does it.\n\n<div class=\"calc\" style=\"border:2px solid var(--ink,#111);border-radius:10px;padding:18px;margin:22px 0;background:var(--paper-2,#faf8f2)\">\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 12px;font-weight:700\">Prime cost per mile calculator</p>\n<div style=\"display:flex;flex-wrap:wrap;gap:16px\">\n<label style=\"display:flex;flex-direction:column;font-size:13px;gap:4px\">Electricity price ($ per kWh)<input id=\"pc-kwh\" type=\"number\" step=\"0.01\" min=\"0\" value=\"0.17\" style=\"padding:8px;font-size:16px;width:150px\"></label>\n<label style=\"display:flex;flex-direction:column;font-size:13px;gap:4px\">Gas price ($ per gallon)<input id=\"pc-gas\" type=\"number\" step=\"0.01\" min=\"0\" value=\"3.50\" style=\"padding:8px;font-size:16px;width:150px\"></label>\n<label style=\"display:flex;flex-direction:column;font-size:13px;gap:4px\">Miles per year<input id=\"pc-mi\" type=\"number\" step=\"500\" min=\"0\" value=\"12000\" style=\"padding:8px;font-size:16px;width:150px\"></label>\n</div>\n<p id=\"pc-out\" style=\"margin:14px 0 0;font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\" aria-live=\"polite\"></p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px 0 0;font-size:12px;color:var(--ink-2,#555)\">The prices above are example values, not current averages. Enter your own.</p>\n</div>\n<script>\n(function(){\nvar E=0.36,MPG=38;\nfunction f(){\nvar k=parseFloat(document.getElementById('pc-kwh').value),g=parseFloat(document.getElementById('pc-gas').value),m=parseFloat(document.getElementById('pc-mi').value);\nvar o=document.getElementById('pc-out');\nif(!(k>=0)||!(g>=0)||!(m>=0)){o.textContent='Enter all three numbers.';return;}\nvar ce=E*k,cg=g/MPG,be=g/(MPG*E);\nvar win=ce<cg?'Electric is cheaper':(ce>cg?'Gas is cheaper':'They cost the same');\no.innerHTML='<strong>'+win+'.</strong> Electric: '+(ce*100).toFixed(1)+' cents per mile. Gas: '+(cg*100).toFixed(1)+' cents per mile. Over '+Math.round(m).toLocaleString()+' miles that is $'+(ce*m).toFixed(0)+' electric versus $'+(cg*m).toFixed(0)+' gas. Break-even electricity price at your gas price: $'+be.toFixed(3)+' per kWh.';\n}\n['pc-kwh','pc-gas','pc-mi'].forEach(function(i){document.getElementById(i).addEventListener('input',f);});\nf();\n})();\n</script>\n\n**How the calculator works.** Electric cost per mile is **0.36 kWh times your price per kWh**. Gas cost per mile is **your price per gallon divided by 38**. The 0.36 kWh per mile (36.0 kWh per 100 miles) and the 38 mpg on gas are the EPA's figures for the 2021–2025 RAV4 Prime from fueleconomy.gov. EPA electricity figures are measured at the wall, so they already include charging losses. The 42-mile electric range is the EPA rating; a Cars.com road test measured 42.7 miles on a 2021 Prime. See our [MPG guide](/guides/toyota-rav4-mpg-by-year-gas-hybrid-prime/).\n\n## Break-Even Electricity Price\n\nIf your price per kWh is below the break-even number, electric driving costs less per mile than gas.\n\n| GAS PRICE | GAS COST PER 100 MILES | BREAK-EVEN ELECTRICITY ($ PER kWh) |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| $3.00 | 7.9 cents | 0.219 |\n| $3.50 | 9.2 cents | 0.256 |\n| $4.00 | 10.5 cents | 0.292 |\n| $4.50 | 11.8 cents | 0.329 |\n| $5.00 | 13.2 cents | 0.365 |\n\n## What the Calculator Leaves Out\n\n- **Real-world range.** Owners report electric range falling well below 42 miles in cold weather, and the gas engine can run for cabin heat. That raises your cost per mile in winter. See the [MPG guide](/guides/toyota-rav4-mpg-by-year-gas-hybrid-prime/).\n- **Public charging.** Fast-charging prices are usually higher than home rates. Enter that price instead if you rely on it.\n- **Time-of-use rates.** Charging overnight on an off-peak rate can lower the electric number substantially.\n- **Maintenance.** Electric miles do not wear the engine, but oil still ages with time. See the [maintenance schedule](/guides/toyota-rav4-maintenance-schedule-gas-and-prime/).\n- **Comparison with the RAV4 Hybrid.** Once the Prime's battery is depleted it runs as a hybrid at 38 mpg on gas, a little under the 2019–2025 RAV4 Hybrid's 39–40 mpg combined.\n\n## Frequently Asked Questions\n\n### Is it cheaper to drive a RAV4 Prime on electric or gas?\n\nIt depends on your prices. Electric is cheaper when your electricity price per kWh is below your gas price divided by about 13.7.\n\n### How much electricity does a RAV4 Prime use?\n\nThe EPA rates it at 36.0 kWh per 100 miles on electric, which is 0.36 kWh per mile, measured at the wall.\n\n### What does it cost to charge a RAV4 Prime?\n\nAbout 15 kWh of wall energy covers the 42-mile EPA electric range (0.36 kWh times 42 miles). Multiply by your price per kWh.\n\n### What mpg does the RAV4 Prime get on gas?\n\nThe EPA rates it at 38 mpg combined when running as a hybrid.\n\n## Related RAV4 Guides\n\n- [Toyota RAV4 Towing Capacity by Year, Trim and Hybrid](/guides/toyota-rav4-towing-capacity-by-year-trim/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 MPG by Year: Gas, Hybrid and Prime](/guides/toyota-rav4-mpg-by-year-gas-hybrid-prime/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Recall Tracker: Every Recall 2013–2026](/guides/toyota-rav4-recall-tracker-2013-2026/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Tire Size by Year and Trim (2013–2025)](/guides/toyota-rav4-tire-size-by-year-and-trim/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Maintenance Schedule: Gas and Prime](/guides/toyota-rav4-maintenance-schedule-gas-and-prime/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Common Problems by Generation and Powertrain](/guides/toyota-rav4-common-problems-by-generation/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Known Issues: NHTSA Complaints by Year](/guides/toyota-rav4-known-issues-nhtsa-complaints-by-year/)\n- [2026 Toyota RAV4 TSB Tracker: Bulletins and Known Issues](/guides/toyota-rav4-2026-tsb-tracker-known-issues/)\n- [Toyota Towing Capacity Chart: Every Truck and SUV](/guides/toyota-towing-capacity-chart-tundra-tacoma-4runner-sequoia/)\n\nSources: U.S. EPA and Department of Energy, [fueleconomy.gov](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/) (2021–2025 RAV4 Prime: 36.0 kWh per 100 miles, 38 mpg on gas, 42 miles electric); [Cars.com test](https://cars.com/articles/how-many-miles-of-ev-range-can-we-get-in-the-2021-toyota-rav4-prime-429710)."
